A Wild Side of Fall on Vancouver Island

Vancouver Island View

Viewing wildlife at this time of year gives us another great reason to head outside. Salmon are returning bringing the opportunity to witness large raptors, black bears, and otters along the river banks. And a drive through Youbou might reward you with Roosevelt elk.

This week, I’m sharing two ideas for a fall outing that combines beautiful scenery with a little wildlife watching. Pack your binoculars and give yourself time to slow down and see what’s around you.

The Salmon Run

Watching salmon push upstream is one of those fall experiences that never gets old. My updated guide shares some of the best places to witness the salmon run on Vancouver Island.

You’ll find viewing locations, tips on when to go, and advice for enjoying the experience while giving the fish and other wildlife plenty of space.

Explore Youbou

We’ve had great luck spotting Roosevelt elk in Youbou over the years, especially during the fall. While sightings are never guaranteed, this little community on Cowichan Lake offers plenty of reasons to make the drive.

My guide shares lakeside parks, walking trails, local history and ideas for exploring the area. If elk make an appearance, enjoy watching from a respectful distance.

Turn Your Fall Drive into a Story with Camena

Sponsored Feature

If this week’s wildlife spots have you planning a drive, Camena adds a little storytelling along the way. Its self-guided audio tours play stories automatically as you reach each location, so you can put your phone away and enjoy the scenery.

The Highway 1 tour between Victoria and Nanaimo fits beautifully with a fall outing. It includes stops at Goldstream’s big trees and waterfall, where the chum salmon run typically begins later this month, before climbing to the Malahat summit and continuing through the Cowichan Valley. One purchase covers both directions for CA$19.99.

You can also try the free Inner Harbour walk in Victoria, with no account needed, or explore further with a half-day city walk or Galloping Goose bike tour.

All tours play in eight languages and work offline once downloaded. Tours for Nanaimo and the drive to Tofino are coming soon!

Wherever you decide to roam, have a great long weekend, and happy Thanksgiving!

Vancouver Island View My husband and I both turned 50 in August, and we celebrated with a bucket-list trip to Iceland. We rented a car and spent just under two weeks travelling around the country, loosely following the famous Ring Road. Along the way, we saw so many waterfalls that I quickly lost count, along with dramatic mountains, rugged ocean scenery, sprawling lava fields, geothermal areas, the northern lights, glaciers and icebergs. We passed more sheep than I could ever count and...

Vancouver Island View This week, I’m sharing several places where you can experience Vancouver Island’s magnificent old-growth forests without visiting Cathedral Grove. From easy woodland walks to waterfall trails and remote backroad adventures, each offers a different way to appreciate these remarkable giants. Hidden Gems members can also explore my newest article about our journey to Canada’s largest known tree. Reaching it takes considerably more effort, but standing before a tree of that...

Vancouver Island View We just got back from a family road trip in the interior, with Revelstoke being our main point of interest. It's a pretty little town, with lots of great places to eat and things to see and do. However, by the time our road trip was nearing the end I was more than ready to come back home. Vancouver Island really is a very special spot. And I have several great island road trips that showcase what I love most about this beautiful rock. Perhaps one of them will inspire you...
